Meet Our Team
We are award-winning architects and technologists, empowering meaningful built landscapes.
We founded AVID because we want to do intentional, inspiring work. We want to make things better. For us, there is no greater calling than to use our talents to empower others to live and work with meaning and purpose.
Cynthia Dovell | MArch, Architect AAA, OAA, MRAIC
Cynthia obtained her Masters of Architecture from the University of Toronto and is a licensed Architect in both Alberta and Ontario. Having grown up in the prairie province of Alberta living in both urban and rural places, she brings a deep knowledge of the Alberta landscape and the communities that live here. With experience working together with many diverse groups and organizations on community facilities, she is adept at finding ways to meet diverse needs. Her resulting designs have been both functional and artful, as demonstrated by several award-winning projects.
“My family is fairly diverse, with my parents being from seemingly opposite cultural backgrounds. We also moved to new towns or cities every two years and I constantly had to make new friends. As a result, I developed a very helpful ability to understand issues from multiple perspectives.
In practicing architecture, the whole process of working together with other people toward a common goal from start to finish is what I love most about our work.”
Lindsay Farr | MArch, Intern Architect AAA
Lindsay is an Intern Architect and graduated with her Masters of Architecture from the University of Calgary. She is passionate about sustainable development in our communities, and believes that good architecture is important for creating vibrant, healthy communities.
“Having lived and worked in many communities throughout Alberta, I have learned that every community is different making it important to take the time to understand the context and culture for which we are designing.
The design process presents many problems to be solved, and it is coming up with solutions for these challenges that I love.”
Therese Martinez-Yu | MArch, Intern Architect AAA
Therese is an Intern Architect and graduated with her Masters of Architecture from McGill University. She has lived and worked in Edmonton, Vancouver and Montreal, and believes in providing beautiful yet functional spaces that give meaning and enhances the lives of its users.
“I’ve lived and travelled in different cities and the strongest memories I have of a place are influenced by its built environment – how the space felt around me, the sounds, shapes and atmosphere. I think our built environment plays such an important part in shaping our lives.
My favourite part of the design process is the collaboration between all the different backgrounds and disciplines. I enjoy the process of combining various forms of knowledge and expertise to achieve the final product.”
Jason Ruhl | Dipl. Arch. Tech
Jason is a Senior Architectural Technologist. He graduated with Honours from NAIT in 2002 and has practiced as a consultant throughout Northern Alberta for more than 10 years. He brings a unique combination of real-world construction experience and technical knowledge to his architectural work.
“I’ve been on construction sites since I was very young. There, I saw how the care and precision someone invested in a project came through in the end result. I like to push materials and shapes to their limits, to use the most basic elements in different ways to solve a problem, or complete a design
My favourite part of the design process is that ‘aha!’ moment – figuring out how something can be done simply, cleanly, so it becomes representative part of the whole.”
